Staff and Coaching Philosophies Skyline Juniors is going into its ninth year stronger and more determined to lead our region in volleyball. We were very proud of all of our members last year and their efforts as they helped Skyline to be ranked the #4 club in the State of Texas by LoneStarVolleyball.com. Our staff is a large part of what makes this possible. As we head into the 2007-2008 season, eleven (11) of our staff members have collegiate coaching experience and twenty six have collegiate playing experience. Each team will have a head coach, and an assistant coach plus share very experienced roamer coaches. All of our coaches were chosen based on their playing experience, knowledge of the game, coaching capability, enthusiasm, and their temperament. One main quality that we look for in our coaches is their belief in coaching by encouragement rather than intimidation. We believe the success of our club is only as good as the development of our coaches. ALL of our coaches will be at a minimum IMPACT certified. This is a coaches training clinic discussing how to communicate, encourage, and train athletes that are striving to become better players. Expectations of Coaches As parents, your expectations of a coach include many different aspects. Our coach’s main objective is to provide our athletes with as much individual and team training as possible. The coaches are required to plan and organize each team's individual practice sessions, administer instruction at tournaments, and develop the composition of the team. We ask our coaches to be good role models and set good examples for the players and others they may come in contact with. The staff of Skyline Juniors and SPV will provide all the administration for tournaments, travel, and finances within the club so our coaches can concentrate on coaching and their own personal growth. College Recruiting Experience Our coaching staff has an extensive amount of experience working with college recruiting. Both as players and as coaches, we have experienced many levels of college athletics from NCAA Division I, NAIA, to Junior College. We know effective ways to market our athletes, what college coaches are looking for, and pitfalls players and parents should avoid. Recruiting Workshops We understand junior’s volleyball is an investment in your child's life, and we would like to be a part of that also. Granted, there are many advantages to having your child play club volleyball, but the most satisfying return on your investment is to see your child play for the college or university of their choice. Therefore, no junior’s club program is complete without informing both players and parents about the important topic of scholarships and college recruiting. We will host a "Recruiting Workshop" for both players and parents that will cover the do’s and don’ts of timely and effective communication with colleges and universities. We will set aside time to record some skills and introductions for their recruiting tapes. There are certain ways to design a video to get the coaches attention, and if it is done wrong, some coaches will not even look at the tape. We will also discuss different ways parents can videotape matches and how to put the videos together. We will provide examples of various ways athletes can set up their profiles to make them appealing to college coaches and will also facilitate individual and group meetings with the recruiting coordinator. This is a workshop good for all Skyline athletes no matter what sport they may pursue in college. It will be a workshop for everyone interested in getting information and put together the best ways to get college coaches to see our athletes.
Tryout Procedures
The tryout process can be one of the most difficult things you and your athlete will do all year long. Not only is it difficult on the athlete and the parents, but it is difficult on the coaches as well. There are many decisions and factors involved when choosing a team. We have tried to make this as comfortable as possible for all parties involved. If at all possible, we recommend each athlete try to attend all tryouts in their age group. We do understand and encourage you to try out for other clubs to find the one that best suits each person. However, attending all the tryouts will give us more of an opportunity to see each athlete. During our tryout process, the athletes will undergo several evaluations where each athlete will be individually rated on their skill level in all areas, then ranked accordingly by position. The players will be put into teams so their overall court skills, attitude, and interaction with others players can be evaluated. Throughout the tryouts, there will be game like situations each athlete will participate in to give us a chance to evaluate them. In our minds and within our staff, we will put the athletes into three categories; those we are ready to make an offer to, those we are still seriously considering, and those we cannot offer a position at this point in time. We understand your needs and desires are to know how your daughter compares to the other athletes so you can plan accordingly. Therefore, throughout the tryout process if you are pressured to make a commitment to another club prior to our last tryout, you may contact us to get an evaluation on your daughter. However, we feel it is very important for your daughter to attend as many of the tryouts as possible. As the tryout process proceeds for each age group, we will be making decisions and putting together our teams. Within two days after the last tryout for each age group, we will post how many spots are available for each team. The page is found by clicking on the “Teams/Rosters” link at the top of our website. This way you will know if positions are still available. The North Texas Region has an “Offer and Acceptance” policy this year. Specific dates have been set for the different age groups as to when tryouts may be held. Therefore, no one can hold a tryout until that specific date. A deadline date for acceptance has also been implemented once the offer is made. This will allow the athlete time to refuse or accept an offer. Please click here for detailed information from the region.

At the end of each tryout, we may invite a number of athletes to join a specific team. We will not be able to hold a spot on the team until you have made the initial installment (see payment plan). This deposit acts as your commitment to join Dallas Skyline Juniors. At the first team meeting an additional amount will be due. (this amount will be made known at the information meeting, in October, along with a full payment schedule. Practice Schedules and Information 2008 Practice Times and Locations
It is very difficult to find facilities able to accommodate our needs 100% of the time. We are very excited and truly fortunate to be mostly under one roof and in such a quality facility. We have a written agreement with both locations, but there may be a few conflicts throughout the season that may require a different practice location to be utilized. Skyline Juniors Practices We are very fortunate to have flexibility with practice days and times, therefore we have flexibility to plan accordingly if there are conflicts. There will be position practices every other Tuesday and a team practice on your designated day and on Sundays for non-tournament weekends. Our teams will share the two facilities and practice times to allow for an average of 2 practices a week. If a team participates in a tournament on a weekend, then there will be no practice on Sundays. After tryouts, each player will be given a schedule of finalized practice times and tentative tournaments. All tournament schedules will be finalized the week after the Tour of Texas Qualifier and Texas Championship Series for those teams participating in these tournaments. Attendance at practice is mandatory. It is impossible to develop the quality teams Skyline desires to develop with inconsistency at practices. In an unusual circumstance it is the athlete’s responsibility to inform their head coach immediately of the situation. Attendance will be taken at all practices. If an athlete has an unexcused absence (determined at the coach's discretion), then they will be required to sit out the first game of the following tournament. Because athletes must learn to organize their time and plan ahead accordingly, homework is not an excuse to miss practice. SPV Practices We are very fortunate to have flexibility with practice days and times; therefore we have flexibility to plan accordingly if there are conflicts. Attendance at practice is highly encouraged. It is impossible to develop the quality teams SPV desires to develop with inconsistency at practices. In an unusual circumstance it is the athlete’s responsibility to inform their head coach immediately of the situation. Attendance will be taken at all practices. If an athlete has an excess of unexcused absences (determined at the coach's discretion), then they will be required to sit out the first game of a tournament. We are willing to work with other commitments but we are also dedicated to the teams’ success and that requires every athlete to participate. Tournament participation is also mandatory (for Skyline Juniors) because we train as a team and when someone misses it affects the whole team. Tournaments give your athlete the chance to compete at higher levels, develop their court skills, and strengthen their knowledge of the game. They also give the athlete a chance to be seen by college scouts. Tournament agendas, lodging arrangements and other important travel information will be provided to each player as soon as the club directors have received the information from the tournament directors. We prefer to do most of our communication through e-mail and our website. We will post hotel and tournament information for your team on the website as soon as it is available. All tournament schedules will be finalized the week after the Tour of Texas Qualifier and Texas Championship Series. Skyline Juniors Playing Time: The team’s head coach is responsible for the composition of the team and determining playing time. We cannot and will not guarantee playing time to anyone. It is in the best interest of the team we compete for championships and this may include some players not playing in some matches. The head coaches will make their decisions based on a player's attendance at practices, the importance of an event, attitude, and most importantly the team's needs. As parents, please understand as coaches we will do our best do get everyone playing time, but our main focus at tournaments is the team's success. We will do our best to get your athlete the best training in the practice sessions and clinics, but we cannot guarantee playing time at tournaments to anyone. If you feel you must discuss your child’s playing time with a coach we ask this NOT BE DONE AT THE TOURNAMENT. Several times we have seen games lost because a coach lost their objectivity as a result of a discussion with a parent influencing their decisions. Please save these discussions until after the tournament. Having coached for several years, we can promise your coach will be thinking about your daughter. SPV Playing Time: The team’s head coach will be responsible for composition of the team, and determining playing time. All players will be given the opportunity to play at tournaments. If you feel you must discuss your child’s playing time with a coach we ask this NOT BE DONE AT THE TOURNAMENT. Several times we have seen games lost because a coach lost their objectivity as a result of a discussion with a parent influencing their decisions. Tournament Transportation: The club will not
provide transportation to non-airfare tournaments. It is the parent's
responsibility to find transportation for their athlete to and from all road
travel events. The team's coach will not be responsible for finding
transportation. For out of state air-travel tournaments, the club will provide
van transportation to and from the hotel, and to the sanctioned events. The
athletes will not be allowed to ride with anyone other than a coach, club
director, or appointed chaperone. (They will be permitted to ride with their
parent/guardian, or someone their parent designates in
writing.) We will distribute the hotel information for parents in advance on the web page or by email so you will be allowed to make reservations at the same hotel where the teams are staying. Each Skyline Juniors team will have a certain number of rooms reserved for the players (except for 12’s and 13’s). In an effort to keep costs low, SPV players and Skyline 12’s and 13’s will stay with their parents. We cannot guarantee space or make reservations for parents; therefore, it is your responsibility to make plans for your stay. We will ask hotels to hold rooms for parents (including SPV and Skyline 12’s and 13’s) until a specified date. If you have not made a reservation by that date we cannot hold the room. Drug and Alcohol Policy In order for the North Texas Region to support any sanctions put on by the club, one of these two below procedures must take place. If at any time a player is in the possession of or involved with any type of illegal drugs or alcohol, they will be given two options.
If the player(s) are found at fault, further action will take place depending on the severity of the issue. The player may be sent home from the event, dismissed for a period of time, or released from the team permanently (at the expense of their parent / guardian). Prom Policy We understand the importance of an event such as Prom; therefore, we have implemented the following guidelines to allow SENIORS to attend their SENIOR Prom.
We believe it is not fair to a team that has devoted so many hours into practices only to be disqualified from a tournament or to not be given a chance to qualify for Nationals because a few players are gone. It is also not fair to those who must be seen by colleges because they don’t have scholarships offers yet. These guidelines will only apply if it is a National Qualifying tournament that is in conflict with prom. Tentative Schedules, Membership Fees, and Payment Plans Parents are expected to keep up with their dues and payment schedules. New this year, we will provide statements once a month by email. After a player has made a team and committed, they will be supplied a number of pre-addressed envelopes to make payments with and will include the amount of payment and the date of which the payment is due. In addition, we are providing the option for membership fees to be paid online with a credit card. If a payment is paid late there will be a $25.00 late fee, and your athlete will not be able to participate in any sanctioned events until a payment is made. Also, if a check does not clear the bank, then you will be charged a $25.00 transaction fee. If the problem occurs two times, you will be asked to pay by cash or a cashier’s check. If an account is not paid in full, the athlete will not be allowed to tryout or participate with any other North Texas volleyball affiliation until the account is paid (this is a North Texas Region policy), and the participant’s name may be turned into UIL because they will have violated the “amateur status”. The parent/guardian responsible for the player will also be responsible for any additional costs or expenses incurred by the club while pursuing collections. If there is some reason the payment cannot be made by the date specified, please contact Jon or Jodie Rye (for SPV, please contact Kirk or Chandra Perry) and we will try to work out the situation. Please know, once you commit to a team we incur several expenses whether you continue your season with the club or not. It is your responsibility to make sure these payments are made unless there is a season ending injury. Please remember, in an effort to minimize the collection hassles as well as ensuring precisely what this year’s dues will be, we have included all of the travel expenses, (airfare, hotel, rental vans, and nationals for some teams) for the players in their dues amounts. However, due to the uncertainty of the economy at this time, there is a slight possibility that additional airfare costs could occur if the prices at the time of purchase are beyond a reasonable amount. Our budget includes airfare prices ranging from $250.00 - $400.00. This does not include food as each athlete is responsible for their own food.
